Tharpanam is an offering to Gods or Pithru devatas dead ancestors. Tharpanam offered to Gods is named on the basis of God to whom we offer Tharpan — viz. Brahma Tharpanam, Surya Tharpanam, etc. The offering which we make to our dead ancestors is Pithru Tharpanam.
It is believed that offering any kind of Tharpanam to Pitru devatas would make them free from their all sins and gives them a path to reach Deva loka or Vaikunta loka and get moksha. Rama performed tharpanam ritual of paying tribute to ancestors for Dasaratha at various placing by placing four pindams rice balls. However, to his dismay the pindams would turn into worms each time he performed the ritual. A worried Rama prayed to Lord Shiva, who advises Rama to go to mantharavanam manthaaram is the flower of the coral tree, one of the five special trees of heaven and offer his prayers to Him shiva there.
He was instructed to take bath in the Arasalar river near there, before performing the Pitru Tharpanam.

Dasaratha Maharaja thus attained mukthi salvation and hence the name of the deity here is Muktheeswarar. Since then, the locals believe that that performing the Pitru Tharpanam here absolves you of all your Pitru Sabams ancestral curse and Pitru Doshams ancestral sins.
In the outer praharam circumambulatory path you can see the idol of Rama performing the tharpanam and also the four lingams known as Pitru Lingams. This place is considered equivalent to Kasi or Rameswaram.தர்ப்பண மந்திரங்கள் TARPANA MANTRAS

The first part is what is known as Pitru Tarpanam and the second part is known as Karunya Tharpanam.Recently I was in karaikal, got my friends bike and started exploring temples in and around karaikal with Thirunallaru as the centre point.
On my way to sethalapathi at poonthottam I took a refreshing dip at arasalar river that runs under the bridge in the highway. To reach thilatharpana puri the nearest station is Peralam. Express trains that goes to karaikal stops here.
Thila tharpana puri was the place where god Rama paid tribute to his father dasarathan. He was asked to do so by shiva on the banks of arasalar river at mandhara vanam. The Shiva idol is therefore called muktheeswarar since he gave mukti to dasarathan. On the day I went to the temple the goddess swarnavalli amman or Porkodi amman the name I prefer was dressed gorgeously on a yellow with green saree with gold plated kavasa for head, hands and legs.
This place sethalapathy is actually famous for the adhi vinayagar temple that is located outside the mukteeswarar temple. Temple is surrounded with bushy hibiscus, coral, lemon, various type of crotons and huge groves of mandhara trees surrounding the inner sanctum.
After exploring the temple, I sat for 10 — 15 mins just to soak around the greenery of the temple and enjoy the silence it provided. It was a very small temple, the trees were well watered and it was very well maintained. I had spent a couple of hours at that place and it was beautiful. You are commenting using your WordPress.
